Year One Autumn Term (2)

'Light and Dark'

National Curriculum

Discuss the topic ‘light and dark’ with the children. Produce a mind map with the children to assess the level of understanding of light and dark  What questions do children want to find out answers for?

Children to carry out a simple survey to identify sources of light around the inside and outside of the building.  Record onto a simple table.

Communication Skills Level 1
*I talk about my work

Small groups will go into the PE cupboard and experience the dark. Discuss and ask questions.  Can we see anything in the dark – predict and find out…

Children to make firework paintings using tools to drag the paint/ glitter, working  independently .  ICT link – use Black Cat Paint to make firework pictures,  ICT – Espresso Fireworks video & science programs

 Problem Solving
*I can think of some reasons why things might happen.

Whole class discussion about reflectors on clothes, bikes, uniforms and why they are important.   Children to look at their coats, bags and reflective items – shine with a torch to test. Test a few different materials to shine light to see reflective property.  Record on simple grid with a tick to show non-reflective and reflective.

S12.g

Information Technology Level 1
*I use the computer to draw pictures of what I have seen or done.

Children to look at uniforms using reflective materials.  Discuss road safety and safety of police, fire services using the reflective clothing.  Children to use a selection of reflective materials and strips to make pictures of firemen, police,  road crossing patrol, workmen….in their uniform

*Mini Sats Booklet on Light & Dark

Discuss the effects of the weather on people and the environment. Look particularly at the lack of light during the winter months.   What happens in winter?  What things do we like to do?  How do people keep warm?  Children to use a body template to dress in winter clothes

Communication Skills Level 1
*I can draw labelled diagrams about my area, using geographical language

Use big book on space and the Internet to research the idea of space.  What are the names of the planets?  What do they look like?  How would we get to the planets?  Look at the first moonwalk video on Topmarks/Espresso
Children to paint pictures of planets/pastel drawings of planets.
Children to create papier mache rockets over a series of sessions to allow paper to dry fully before painting the rocket.
Role play rocket on shared area.

Make a class mind map about autumn
Go for an autumn walk to identify and collect items altered by the onset of autumn and winter – look for signs
On return to class – discuss the items we have collected and create a collage of found materials

Using a simple moving picture books show class how simple levers and sliders can bring a story to life.  Demonstrate how to make simple sliding mechanisms and levers using card and paper fasteners.  Ask the children to explore the idea of appearing and disappearing-  Make a simple picture with a pop up action.   ( lit link Make a Book book)

Look at a variety of moving picture books.  Remind children of the pop up lever action of last weeks’ lesson.   How can we make our pictures slide across the page?  Children to design and make a simple moving picture by creating  a slit in paper with an item on a simple card slider.

*I can talk about how moving objects work (e.g. slides or levers)
*I draw pictures with labels to tell others about my designs
*I can talk about my work, telling others why I did it the way I did
*I can tell someone what I am making and which tools I am using
Improving Own Learning & Performance Level 1
*I can practise skills the teacher has shown me,and use them to think of my own ideas
*I can talk about my ideas, saying what I like and dislike.
Problem Solving Level 1
*I can work out how something works by looking at it (sometimes taking it apart)

Discuss what is meant by hibernation.  Talk about some of the  animals that hibernate and where they go in the winter.   Talk about moving pictures made in previous weeks and introduce concept of ‘lift the flap’ pictures.  Teacher to show selection of books with lift the flap. Discuss how we could make a picture with flaps.  What would we do?  What would we need?  Discuss ideas for the page.  Children to have demo of how to construct the flap and discuss the backgrounds and under the flap.  How could we illustrate a hibernation picture in this way.  Some children to use more than one flap on picture – making it a game – e.g. find the hedgehog.

Using saltdough to make hibernating animal.  Initially they will draw picture of what they want to make and then follow plan.
